Artist Statement
“human/nature” is an immersive exploration of the natural world through biomimicry and design. The objects and graphics in this exhibition were created through combined multidisciplinary techniques, and largely inspired by modular and universal design processes.
Biomimicry emulates elements of nature for the purpose of solving human problems. Imagine engineers looking at the way birds fly to create the first airplane; they are inspired to innovate based on natural processes. There are three types of biomimicry – copying form and shape, copying a process, and mimicking at an ecosystem’s level. Each of the objects in this collection attempts to mimic these processes or inform a viewer of natural design concepts.
We may live in concrete jungles and think of ourselves as separate than the natural world, but no matter how much of a fabricated rift we create between us and the outside, we can’t escape the fact that we are a part of nature. It is important to recognize that not only is nature thought of as plant and animal but also as design. Nature is human and combining the perspectives of the natural world and human world allow us to expand our way of thinking.
