Artist Statement

This series of vessels is a study of both clay and glaze and their ability to capture movement. With clay having stiff and ridged properties, it is through alterations of the form that my work begins to break those constraints. I choose to use clay to explore this idea as it is a versatile material that can take on many different forms whether they are functional or sculptural. I am inspired by artists such as George Ohr and Sharon Greenwood, as they both manipulate clay to explore movement in their ceramic work. I choose the vessel as the format for this series as I feel that a vessel form is the best way to introduce the idea of movement, as it has been the most recognizable object throughout the history of ceramics. I strive to accentuate the movement by physically manipulating these large forms.
