Artist Statement
My work explores the still life painting genre as a personal form of expression through the lens of women
artists who have historically pioneered the genre. The still life genre is often overlooked or considered
secondary, but I see it as a powerful tool for storytelling, artistic identity, and emotional expression. Artists
like Anne Vallayer-Coster and Audrey Flack inspire my approach– both for their technical skill and the
way they use objects to convey meaning.
I incorporate inherited and domestic items from my home into my work, things like my
great-grandmother’s mixing bowl, and my mother’s fabric collection—transforming them into pleasing
compositions. I blend realism and abstraction with intentional brushwork, vibrant color, to create a piece
that evokes feelings of interest in the viewer.
To me, these paintings function as “indirect portraits.” They reflect parts of myself and the women in my
family. These objects hold emotional value, serving as markers of history in my work and keeping
connections to the past.
This work feels important not just as a reflection of who I am, but also because it brings attention to the
beauty in everyday life. It shines a light to spaces and moments in time that might seem insignificant but
can be beautiful. I hope that by depicting these details, viewers will reflect on their own experiences and
memories.
