Artist Statement

Line and Color is a series of sculptures that concentrate on pushing generative processes and explores the balance of form in space. Made by MIG welding from low carbon steel, this work engages with the material with a focus on formal concerns of line economy, balance, and color. Through these formal constraints, I investigate the technical limitations of steel, manipulating the material through repetitive motions of bending, warping, cutting, and shaping steel to successfully orient the sculpture into a free standing, balanced, harmonious form. As I consider the environment for the balance employed, every individual form facilitates a relationship of balance and counterbalance communicating with the gravity of the surrounding space. By anticipating the physical constraints of gravity and architecture, I consider the placement of my work into its environment.
