Lathe Study

Lathe Study is a series of sculptures that use turned wood and steel assemblage as a
vehicle for personal expression. My work embraces traditional craft methods, and through experimentation, yields unexpected results. This work is a culmination of my love for process and the cathartic nature of making.

Large split turnings, a craft not commonly practiced at this scale, are held by welded steel. Spindles of varying length and shape emerge from symmetrical vessels at balanced angles. Woods such as poplar, honey locust, maple, and walnut highlight the negative space inside and around the delicate assemblage. By using this diverse palette, the viewer is drawn into the intricacies of the piece. Much to the catharsis of their making, intuition is used in the assembly of the spindles. Meanwhile, patinaed steel pedestals add physical weight starkly contrasting the wooden forms, and acting as a structure to hold and display them.

I am honored to present Lathe Study amongst the work of my friends and peers in the 2024 Spring BFA / BA exhibition. This body of work has come from a place of gratitude for the facilities and resources provided to me. I extend my sincere thanks to my instructors for their guidance and honesty, which enabled me to push myself. Lastly, I’d like to thank my friends and family for their continued love and support.
