Floating Grounded
In this series, I have layered paint across three different mediums: projected animation, painting and drawing on Plexiglas, and acrylic paint on canvas.
Last year, I found myself falling madly in love with creating paint brush strokes that hang in mid-air and can be scaled to any height in virtual reality. These objects needed a new method of display without a headset on, so that they would be more accessible. I decided to return to naturalistic observation so I could learn to build an image with three mediums in tandem. I applied an old process of animation called rotoscoping, in which live action footage is traced frame by frame onto glass.
I understand my inspiration of nature and light as a multi-layered experience. This instillation allows a return to the digital and expands painting beyond traditional material definitions. This is how fluid material innovation can be.
