Artist Statement

My BA Project is of my creation of the logo, wordmark, uniform design for fictitious football expansion team from Milwaukee called the Milwaukee Blackcats. This project will consist of digital illustrations done for the team logo and the typography, and jersey mockups done in Adobe Illustrator. I chose to name the team the Milwaukee Blackcats because of Milwaukee’s famous landmark known as Black Cat Alley and used symbolism in the logo that incorporated hidden nods to the city of Milwaukee in the team logo and color scheme. The nose of the cat is in the shape of an M for Milwaukee, as well as the shape of the cat’s whiskers is in the shape of a W for Wisconsin.

The color scheme consists of black, blue, and cream yellow. I wanted the colors to have a representation of Milwaukee and I feel that this color choice shows that. The primary color is going to be black, after the team’s name, the Blackcats. The secondary color is blue that symbolizes Lake Michigan and the Great Lakes in general that surround Milwaukee and Wisconsin as a whole. For the third alternative color I chose a cream yellow color. The reason for this is because Milwaukee is often referred to as the ‘Cream City’ and black cat’s eyes are typically portrayed as yellow, so I wanted to pay homage to both and mix them.

The uniform design contains three separate jersey concepts, a home jersey, an away jersey, and an alternate jersey. The home jersey consists of mostly black as the jersey color and the numbers consist of a couple different variations, such as white numbers with a blue outline, blue numbers with a white outline, and solid white and blue numbers. The away jersey is white with black numbers with a blue outline, blue numbers with a black outline, and solid black and blue numbers. Finally for the alternative style jersey, the color of the jersey is blue, white numbers with a black outline, black numbers with a white outline, and solid white and black numbers. There are three different styles for pants for each color, which includes black, white, and blue.
