Graduation rates are dramatically impacted by income, with much lower rates of graduation for students from low-income families (U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics, 2014). As the figure below shows, the aptitude of students is not the underlying issue; a student from a high-income family is considerably more likely to graduate than a student from a low-income family even if the students have equivalent college admission scores (e.g., Carnevale & Strohl, 2010).
