Robert J. Beck is Associate Professor in the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee’s Department of Political Science.
A scholar of international law and international relations, Dr. Beck is the author, co-author, or editor/co-editor of 6 books. His articles have appeared in International Security, Review of International Studies, International Studies Perspectives, The Commonwealth Journal of International Affairs, International Journal of Refugee Law, Wisconsin International Law Journal, and Virginia Journal of International Law, among other prominent venues.
Dr. Beck has served as “International Law” section chair of the International Studies Association. He was co-editor of The International Law volume of the International Studies Encyclopedia. Beck was also 2012 Recipient of the Faculty Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award at UWM.
From January of 2014 until January of 2023, Dr. Beck served as Associate Vice Chancellor and Chief Information Officer at UWM. From 2003-2013, he was Chief Information Officer of UWM’s College of Letters and Science. From 2000 until July of 2011, he served as Director of Academic Technology at UWM’s Center for International Education. From 1998-2000, Dr. Beck served as Director of Tufts University’s Center for Teaching Excellence. Before Tufts, he spent nine years in full-time teaching and research at the University of Virginia (Government & Foreign Affairs, 1989-90, 91-98) and the University of Minnesota (Political Science, 1990-91).
While a doctoral student at Georgetown University, Dr. Beck was honored by selection for a two-year Writing Center Fellowship. In 1996-97, he held one of six University Teaching Fellowships at the University of Virginia.
