Executive function (EF) is a set of cognitive skills involved in controlling thoughts, emotions, and actions. EF plays a key role in children’s academic and social success, and impairment in EF is associated with a range of psychological disorders. This program, provides an in-depth overview of executive functioning based on current research and provide information for parents to support their children’s EF. This program also reviews research on the role of digital age in children’s EF development and the impairment of EF in different psychological disorders. Finally, presented is an intervention program that can be readily utilized in schools.
About This Program:
This 10-hour professional growth program is designed to be completed over 4 – 5 weeks. Learners will participate in completely self-paced, asynchronous activities. Participants will complete a total of four asynchronous modules that involve reading, knowledge checks, and brief reflections. Learners should expect to spend approximately 2 hours of weekly commitment to complete each module over 4 -5 weeks.
The modules include:
- Module 1:Introduction to executive functioning
- Module 2:The role of guardians and digital age in children’s executive function development
- Module 3: The relation between executive function and psychopathologies
- Module 4: Intervention targeting executive functioning
The development of this professional growth program was supported by the Federal School-Based Mental Health Professionals grant WI Department of Public Instruction (DPI) received. UWM School Psychology program received a sub-award from DPI to develop and implement this program.
Modality: Four self-paced asynchronous, interactive modules
Eligible Participants:
School psychologists, school social workers, and school counselors practicing in K-12 schools in Wisconsin. The eligibility is limited to those three types of school-based mental health professionals per the grant requirements.
