FELLOWSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT

The UWM Multicultural Scholars Collaborative is pleased to announce our inaugural fellowship competition!

Two fellowships ($3000) will be awarded in 2021; Fellows will be active from March 2021 to August 2021

The Collaborative’s Mentoring Fellowship has a dual mission: 1) To recognize Fellows for the time and labor they provide to UWM to support diversity, equity, and anti-racism efforts on campus and 2) To recognize and support doctoral students’ vital contributions to diversity and equity due to their mentoring activities, as they support BIPOC undergraduate students through the higher education pipeline.

Fellows will:

  • Participate in Multicultural Scholars Collaborative activities such as writing retreats and networking events during the spring of their fellowship award
  • Mentor McNair Scholars and participate in McNair Scholars program activities during summer 2021
  • Collaborate with the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program office to mentor undergraduates who wish to transform their explorations of equity into research and scholarship

Requirements:

  • Current or recent engagement in equity, diversity, inclusion, and anti-racist efforts on campus,
  • Experience or interest in initiatives for Black and Indigenous People of Color and other minoritized students’ research access
  • UWM doctoral student currently enrolled for at least 3 credits (or 1 credit during prelim semester, in accordance with Grad School/departmental guidelines), with verifiable anticipated enrollment for Fall 2021
  • Availability for mentoring undergraduate McNair Scholars in summer 2021
  • (preferred, not required) Engagement in activities that currently involve undergraduate mentoring or that promote access/opportunity for BIPOC undergraduates

Application requirements:

  • Copy of your resume’ or CV
  • Personal statement (1-2 pages, maximum) that describes 1) the recent and current equity, diversity, inclusion, and anti-racist efforts in which you are involved on campus –including mentoring activities and 2) your perspectives on the pipeline for undergraduate and graduate student success in research, including your experiences with mentoring BIPOC students along this pipeline.
  • Contact information for 1-2 references (letters are not required but referees may be contacted)

Fellowship Award Benefits:

  • Each fellow will receive an award of $1500 to recognize past and current work in equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts on campus and compensation of $1500 for fulfillment of fellowship responsibilities outlined above
  • Resources through the Multicultural Scholars Collaborative, including mentoring and support from BIPOC faculty
