Program Evaluation of the UWM Roberto Hernandez Center
Navigating college as an underrepresented student can pose unique challenges that extend beyond academic pursuits. The lack of representation within the student body and faculty can lead to feelings of isolation and a sense of not fully belonging. Underrepresented students often encounter limited access to resources, mentorship, and opportunities that their counterparts may take for granted. Stereotypes and biases can also contribute to a heightened sense of scrutiny, making it harder to engage in the academic and social aspects of college life. Furthermore, the absence of diverse perspectives in the curriculum may create a disconnect between the student’s experiences and the material being taught. Overcoming these challenges requires resilience, a strong support system, and a commitment from educational institutions to foster an inclusive environment that recognizes and values the richness of diversity among students.
Understanding these realities, the Roberto Hernandez Center at UWM offers students a “home away from home”. Since 1970, the RHC has supported Latino/Hispanic students with staying on track and building skills for success. They facilitate full engagement by providing referrals to academic advising and mental health counseling, actively monitor resource utilization, enhance understanding of university policies, and maintain ongoing meetings for continuous support throughout the semester.
With funding offered by the UWM Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, we are partnering with the Roberto Hernandez Center to conduct a rigorous program evaluation of the student services offered by the Center. We hope that these findings will be helpful in shaping strategic steps toward UWM becoming a Hispanic Serving Institution.
