The EQUITY Research Group

We are a research lab within the Department of Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, directed by Dr. Gabriela Nagy. We are dedicated to addressing the root causes that impact mental health, working to improve the well-being of communities that have been overlooked and underserved both in the past and today by working closely with our community and academic partners.

Mission & Vision

We strive to be the leading academic research group dedicated to achieving mental health equity for communities that have been systematically underserved and marginalized. Our work focuses on developing and implementing equitable, high-quality mental health care and culturally-, linguistically-, and contextually-relevant interventions for all. We understand that social drivers of health, such as discrimination, migration stress, and limited access to resources, play a significant role in worsening mental health inequities. By addressing these factors, we aim to improve mental health outcomes and ensure fair access to care for disadvantaged groups.

Commitment to Justice & Inclusion

We are dedicated to improving mental health care access for underserved communities and fostering diversity in the mental health workforce. We center equity in all our work, from research to community partnerships, by addressing the social factors that create mental health inequities. We believe mental health care is a basic human right and are committed to ensuring that everyone has access to high-quality, culturally-, linguistically, contextually-relevant care. We also focus on training individuals from underrepresented backgrounds to become leaders in mental health, reflecting the diversity of the communities we serve.
