Sunwoong Kim is specialized in urban issues, education and and human resources development. He works in political economy and development in East Asian countries, particularly Korea. He was the Co-Editor of International Economic Journal (2003-15). He served as the President of Korean American University Professors Association (KAUPA) and the Korea-America Economic Association (KAEA).
