Machine Learning in Medicine

Special Session on
Machine Learning in Medicine
The Tenth International Conference on Machine Learning and Applications (ICMLA 2011)
December 18-21, 2011 Honolulu, Hawaii, USA

AIM AND SCOPE

This special session will concentrate on machine learning applications in medicine. Medicine is increasingly becoming a data-rich quantitative field because of the electronic data capturing methods and the availability of various forms of medical data in electronic form. The availability of medical data and the difficult nature of medical tasks have made it very desirable to employ machine learning methods in medicine. The goal of this special session is to bring into focus and foster research that shows advancement in performing medical tasks by using machine learning methods as well as research that brings-up or addresses issues in applying machine learning to medical settings, for example, issues such as human interpretability, incorporating expert knowledge, limited availability of data and unbalanced data.

TOPICS
Research papers are invited that show application of machine learning methods in medical areas, including but not limited to:

  • Medical diagnosis
  • Deciding drugs and treatments
  • Predicting patient response and outcomes
  • Clinical decision support systems
  • Clinical data mining
  • Classifying patient records and reports
  • Analyzing patient records and reports

Papers advancing machine learning techniques, including in the following ways, that are shown to be especially beneficial for some medical applications are welcome.

  • Learning under limited supervision
  • Human interpretability
  • Incorporating expert knowledge into learning
  • Learning with unbalanced data
  • Learning algorithms
  • Feature selection

Also encouraged are the papers that bring-up or address issues in applying machine learning to medical settings or demonstrate their benefits and pitfalls.

IMPORTANT DATES

  • Paper Submission Deadline:                    July 25, 2011, 11:59 PM PDT (-0700)
