Professional Experience

Software Engineer
Letters and Science Web and Data
University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee
8/2012 – present

I create custom web apps in support of business and administrative activities within the College of Letters and Science. I also create apps for online usability testing.

Technology Coordinator
Center for Academic Technology Support
Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, IL 61920
7/2002 – 7/2012

Duties included writing custom scripts and programs (including XML, PHP, C, Active Server Pages and SQL) to support instructional, research, assessment, and administrative activities, coordinating and designing web pages and consulting with course designers on the use of technology to achieve course objectives. Duties also included consultation with faculty and staff on programming issues related to instructional and administrative activities. Software development projects I was engaged in are listed below.

Center for Academic Technology Support Development Projects (selected list):

  • Web Interface for Podcasting
  • Online Tool for Survey Creation and Data Retrieval (surveyCentral)
  • Communication Disorders and Sciences Student Assessment System
  • Online Course Evaluations System
  • Electronic Writing Portfolio Submission and Rating System
  • Mobile Apps

Computer Programming Specialist
Center for Academic Technology Support
Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, IL 61920
8/2001- 6/2002

Coordinator of Academic Publications
Office of Academic Affairs
Eastern Illinois University, Charleston, IL 61920
10/2000 – 7/2001

Development and maintenance of web pages for Office of Academic Affairs using HTML, JavaScript and Perl. Development of administrative computer applications using Visual Basic.

Materials Engineer
Mechanics of Materials Branch
Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, DC 20375
2/1986 – 7/2000

Developed experimental procedures for the measurement of physical and mechanical properties of materials, characterized failure surfaces, damage mechanisms and material morphology using techniques such as metallography, optical and scanning electron microscopy and analyzed relationships between micro-scale and continuum scale material properties. These experimental observations were supplemented with computational methods, such as finite element analysis, as a means of integrating Materials Science with Solid Mechanics and Thermodynamics in the development, analysis and application of nonlinear constitutive relations, fracture theory and material damage models. Approximately 90% of this activity involved computer programming. Prepared manuscripts documenting research for publication in peer reviewed journals and conference proceedings.

Graduate Assistant
Materials Engineering Department, VPI & SU
6/1984 – 8/1985

Responsible for the experimental investigation and analysis of aqueous corrosion fatigue of Cu-Ni alloys, effect of hydrogen on mechanical properties of copper and its alloys, role of pH on the corrosion of Cu-Ni alloys, effect of hydrogen, temperature and microstructure on the impact behavior of a Mn-Al stainless steel.

Engineering Assistant
Utility Power Generation Division, Babcock and Wilcox, Lynchburg, VA 24501.
6/1983 – 9/1983

Assisted in the analysis of radiation effects on pressure vessel steels and weld metals.

Assistant Lab Technician
Naval Nuclear Fuel Div., Babcock and Wilcox
6/1982 – 9/1982

Involved in the monitoring of pollutant levels in smokestack effluents and performed chemical analysis of water samples for pollution control.

Engineering Assistant
Nuclear Power Generation Div., Babcock and Wilcox
6/1981 – 9/1981

Assisted in the development of computer code for water chemistry analysis for nuclear applications.
