Summary | This is the final report of the EuropeanaTech AI task force. The task force was established in 2019 to investigate the role and impact of AI and machine learning in the cultural heritage sector. Through the report, the task force aims to facilitate the innovative, ethical and sustainable growth of AI technologies in cultural heritage institutions. The report was based on a survey and eight in-depth interviews. The survey received 56 responses from cultural heritage and research institutions, reporting a high interest in AI topics and identifying challenges regarding relevant skills and expertise. The interviewees were cultural heritage professionals across different European institutions. The results report a consensus on the potential of AI for cultural heritage. However, interviewees emphasized the need for collaboration, and identified several challenges, such as the lack of quality data, the complexities of evaluating and integrating AI into existing infrastructure, and concerns regarding ethically deploying AI and communicating the value of applying AI. |
