Summary | This report, authored by Mina Narayanan and Christian Schoeberl, introduces a practical tool to help organizations select and compare over 40 openly available responsible AI frameworks developed by industry, government, and non-government organizations. While a growing set of tools for implementing responsible AI exists, organizations may struggle to determine which ones are most appropriate and how to apply them effectively. To address this, the report presents a matrix that categorizes frameworks along two dimensions: User (whether or not the user’s role falls within Development & Production teams or Governance teams) and Utility (whether or not a framework focuses on AI system Components, Lifecycle stages, or Characteristics such as safety and robustness). Three use cases illustrate the application of the matrix for selecting a responsible AI framework: 1) A business executive seeking organization-wide ethical AI practices. 2) A data scientist looking to document datasets used in a machine learning model. 3) A lawyer designing data protection policies for an organization. The matrix allows users to map frameworks based on their organization role and the type of guidance they need (e.g., documenting training data vs. conducting AI audits). The report was published by the Center for Security and Emerging Technology (CSET), a policy research think tank within Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service. A webpage providing an overview of the report is also available (see Link field). | |
