Learn about ways to get involved with our lab below:
Research Training:
Members of the EQUITY Research Group gain training in the following research areas, methods, and approaches:
- Health equity research
- Community-engaged research methods
- Implementation science
- Psychosocial intervention development (especially in the area of reducing acculturative stress in immigrants and refugees)
- Community-health worker/promotor-led interventions
- Cultural adaptation to evidence-based interventions
- Human centered design
- Quantitative, qualitative, & mixed-methods designs (qualitative + quantitative)
- Program evaluation methodology
- Multicultural education curriculum design
Professional Development:
In addition to the areas listed above, members of the EQUITY Research Group also receive support in the areas of:
- Academic writing (by assisting in the development of peer-reviewed publications)
- Oral communication (by participating in poster and oral conference presentations)
- Providing mentorship (through our "nested mentorship model" whereby more advanced members of the team mentor less advanced or newer members of the team)
- Career advancement (e.g., input on application materials and resumes/CVs, providing letters of recommendations, learning about career options at each stage of training)
We accept applications from undergraduate students in psychology or related fields or volunteers (who are not UWM students) for Research Intern positions on a rolling basis. Research Interns who join our lab, typically:
- Have a strong academic record, as evidenced by Grade Point Average (GPA)
- Evidence significant interest and/or experience in psychology and mental health fields, broadly defined (prior research experience is not required).
- Demonstrate maturity and ability to engage with sensitive clinical information.
- Are reliable (that is, can show up on time, keep their appointments, and complete the tasks that are assigned to them)
- Balance being self-directed and independent (for example, problem-solving on their own) while also being a team-player (for example, knowing when to ask for support and assistant from other team members).
- Can make a 1-year commitment to be an RA (exceptions are made on a case-by-case basis)
Given the nature of our research and advocacy work with immigrants and refugees from Latin America, we are especially interested in recruiting Research Interns who can demonstrate oral and written Spanish language fluency. This is not a requirement.
Funding and Credit for Participation in Lab:
Research Intern positions through the EQUITY Research Group are volunteer positions. However, the lab strongly supports applications for funding through the Support for Undergraduate Research Fellows program, McNair program, and other training programs that provide funding for research-related activities. Research Interns may also receive course credit for their involvement in the lab (PSYCH 290 Undergraduate Research: Lower Division or PSYCH 690 Undergraduate Research: Upper Division).
Application:
If you would like to apply to be a Research Intern with the EQUITY Research Group, please complete the application below. Upon review of application materials, applicants will be invited to interview with the PI (Dr. Gabriela Nagy) and other members of the EQUITY Research Group.
Recruitment Flyer:

Decisions regarding which program faculty will be admitting new students for the next academic year have not yet been finalized. Please stay tuned for information about whether Dr. Nagy will be accepting students into the Master's of Health Psychology program for academic year 2024-2025. Feel free to check back in with this page at a different time for updates – we hope to finalize these decisions in September 2023.

Important Information regarding the Program
Research Training:
The Master's in Health Psychology is an especially good fit for individuals seeking to obtain specialized research training before ultimately applying for a PhD program (generally in Clinical psychology, Health Psychology, or other related fields). During this training period, students will gain exposure to a range of methods and will be involved in several studies. Master's students are expected to carry out a mentored project, which will fulfill the basis of a Mater's Thesis. Master's students in the lab typically subsequently submit a version of this document for peer-reviewed publication.
Clinical Training:
The Master's program is research-intensive, yet it is not a clinical degree. To this end, Master's students do not partake in clinical practica (i.e., direct delivery of clinical interventions in clinics or hospitals) within their curriculum and as such are not license-eligible upon completion of the program. However, Master's students in the EQUITY Research Group might still get experience in clinical research assessment (e.g., utilizing validating assessment batteries with research participants) as well as psychosocial intervention delivery (for example, being a facilitator for the Cultivating Resilience intervention) in the context of research studies.
Funding:
Students enrolled into the Master's program are responsible for paying tuition and other related costs during their graduate training. However, there are sometimes opportunities for funding (tuition remission, stipend, health insurance) in the form of a Teaching Assistantship, Research Assistantship, or Fellowship. Learn more about a range of funding opportunities by visiting the Graduate School assistantship website and fellowship website.
More Information about the Program:
To learn more, please visit the Master's in Health Psychology website.

- Strong academic record at the undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, or master's level
- Desire to pursue a primary research career (e.g., professor at a university of academic medical center)
- Prior experience conducting research within PI-directed research laboratories as a Research Assistant/Intern, Study Coordinator, Lab Manager, Clinical Assessor, or similar roles

- Research interests that clearly align with the current work being carried out at the EQUITY Research Group
Important Information regarding the Program
Joint Master's and PhD Program Format:
Students enrolled into the PhD program fulfill the requirements for a Master's in Clinical Psychology en route to the PhD. Applicants need not have completed a Master's Degree prior to enrolling into the PhD program. Doctoral students who completed a prior Master's Degree can consult program administrators (e.g., Director of Clinical Training, Director of Graduate Training, Chair of Psychology) to waive out of some requirements of the program that they completed within their previous degree. These waivers are conducted on a one-on-one basis and are not guaranteed. Typically, students complete both programs in approximately 6-7 years (inclusive of pre-doctoral internship).
Research Training:
The PhD in Clinical Psychology is heavily focused on providing doctoral students with rigorous training in conducting clinical and translational research, as such it is an especially good fit for individuals seeking to pursue primary academic careers or would like research to be a significant portion of the work that they carry out post-graduation. Doctoral students will be involved with a range of projects, often providing day-to-day oversight and management (e.g., IRB applications, training research personnel, data collection and analysis, etc). Doctoral students will also begin to foster their own research interests, which will serve as the basis for their Master's Thesis and Doctoral Dissertations as well as peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations.
Clinical Training:
PhD students will begin training in clinical assessment and psychotherapy upon arrival into the program. Students complete on-site practica in our Departmental Psychology Clinic as well as through a range of community-based placements (including Community Health Centers, Academic Medical Centers, Veterans Affairs hospitals, and Private Practices). In the last year of training, students complete a full-time pre-doctoral internship. Students enrolled in the program accrue sufficient hours to be competitive for pre-doctoral internships nationally and our students are typically placed at very competitive sites. The program generally places all applicants at APA-accredited internship sites. In addition to accruing clinical hours through practica, PhD students in the EQUITY Research Group might still get experience in clinical research assessment (e.g., utilizing validating assessment batteries with research participants) as well as psychosocial intervention delivery (for example, being a facilitator for the Cultivating Resilience intervention) in the context of research studies.
Funding:
Students enrolled into the PhD program receive funding (tuition remission, stipend, health insurance) in the form of a Teaching Assistantship, Research Assistantship, or Fellowships during the duration of their time in the program. Learn more about a range of funding opportunities by visiting the Graduate School assistantship website and fellowship website.
