Create Collection for CONTENTdm Exercise

Instructions

Note: All materials for this exercise are available under Software & Tutorials and Sample Files. Please download the sample collection and review the Building Records in CONTENTdm Directly on the CONTENTdm Site.

  1. Open/Login to the CONTENTdm admin website and create a new project associated with your login (e.g. eabenoit and Benoit).
  2. For this assignment we will use the sample files and metadata from the Carl H. Harris Music Collection. Please use only the images/metadata associated with the Carl H. Harris Music Collection.
  3. Using the Carl H. Harris Music Collection information, create a custom metadata template for the collection.
  4. Create records in CONTENTdm for each of the six items.
  5. Approve the new items into the collection.
  6. Build a new index for the collection.

Configure the CONTENTdm Interface Exercise

Instructions

Please follow the Configure the CONTENTdm Interface Tutorials (Part I & Part II). Through the tutorial, you will configure the CONTENTdm website for the collection you created during the previous exercise. You must include the following elements:

  • Create a custom header for your collection
  • Describe your collection
  • Adjust the appearance of text throughout the collection
  • Select which fields are available in the Advanced Search function
  • Adjust the appearance of the results page
  • Select which facets users can apply to narrow their search results
  • Insert suggested topics on the collection home page
  • Enable and customize QuickView
  • Customize the Image Viewer
  • Edit footer-based navigation
  • Enable users to print, download, and share items
  • Enable user-generated content (tags and commenting)
  • Customize the collection home page
  • Customize the collection about page
  • Create help/FAQ page
  • Adjust navigation tabs to include: Home, Search, About, Help/FAQ
  • Select viewing options for PDF and Compound Objects

Specific requirements for each element appear below.

Part I Elements and Requirements

  • Create a custom header for your collection
    • Upload and use exercise header file (header.png)
  • Adjust the appearance of text throughout the collection
    • Increase the font size of the level 1 headers to 20 px
    • Change the level 3 header font to Helvetica
    • Change all remaining uses of the Verdana font to Courier
    • Change the visited color of body links to color code: #0db337
  • Select which fields are available in the Advanced Search function
    • Select four fields for the advanced search fields
    • Make one of the fields (not all fields) the default advanced search field
  • Adjust the appearance of the results page
    • Change the layout to a thumbnail view
  • Select which facets users can apply to narrow their search results
    • Enable facets
    • Select three facets to use
  • Insert suggested topics on the collection home page
    • Create the following suggested topics: Leeds Mucsic Corporation; Musical; 1946
  • Enable and customize QuickView
    • Enable QuickView on both landing pages and result pages
    • Display the collection name
    • Use the Composer field in the QuickView title bar
    • Order the metadata as follows: Title, Date, Publisher
    • Change the collection bar font-size to 12 px
  • Customize the Image Viewer
    • Change the viewport background color to black
    • Disable the full browser option on the Image Viewer Toolbar
    • Change the available zoom levels to: 25, 50, 75, 100, 125, 150, 175, 200
    • Make the initial viewport zoom level fit to window

Part II Elements and Requirements

  • Edit footer-based navigation
    • Remove “About” navigation link
    • Insert “Contact Us” email
  • Enable users to print, download, and share items
    • Enable print button
    • Enable download button
    • Limit downloads to small and medium size
    • Enable AddThis functionality and Add scripting from AddThis
  • Enable user-generated content (tags and commenting)
    • Enable both tagging and commenting
    • Enable reporting of tagging and commenting abuses
  • Customize the collection home page
    • Add title to your collection (using the following title: Harris [LAST NAME])
    • Add a description of the collection with the text in the sample text file.
  • Customize the collection about page
    • Enable collection-level about page
    • Insert About Page contents from exercise text file
  • Select viewing options for PDF and Compound Objects​
    • Compound objects: limit display to contents
    • PDF: switch to displaying a link for users to view rather than displaying in website
  • Create help/FAQ page
    • ​Create Help or FAQ Direcory name and Folder in Manage files
    • Upload index.php file from the sample files
  • Adjust navigation tabs to include: Home, Search, About, Help/FAQ
    • ​Change the navigation tabs
