Dr. Alexa Anderson (Lopez) grew up in a rural mill town in northern New Hampshire. A first-generation college student who was intrigued by scientific research, she conducted opioid pain pharmacology basic research as an undergraduate student on the scenic Maine coast at the University of New England. She attended the University of Vermont from 2009-2014 to pursue her MA and PhD in experimental psychology, with a focus on human behavioral pharmacology/substance use disorders. Following her PhD, she completed a post-doctoral fellowship in tobacco regulatory science at Virginia Commonwealth University from 2014-2016. She then moved to the Pacific Northwest where she was employed as a civilian research psychologist with the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research at Joint Base Lewis-McChord until 2018, followed by settling down in the upper Midwest and working in the research office at the William S. Middleton VA Hospital in Madison, WI. She started her current role as an Assistant Professor at UWM in the School of Nursing in 2019.
